Are You Star Crossed Lovers? An Astrologer's Guide to Relationship Compatibility

If you’re a beginner to astrology it can be easy to presume things like a ‘Libra & Scorpio aren't a good match' and go no further than that. But in actual fact, we are WAY more than JUST our Star Sign, so romantic compatibility goes a LOT deeper than that!

Astrologers refer to our Star Sign / zodiac sign as our Sun Sign, because it's denoted by where the sun was during the month of our birth. Our individual birth-chart, (a map of the sky at the precise time and location of our birth) shows our Sun Sign placement, plus ALL the other planetary and astrological placements too.

These all give rise to different parts of our personality. They also tell us things like our talents, and what we are here to learn in life. In a relationship astrology reading, astrologers overlay your chart with your partner’s / friend’s / business partner’s / child's or even pet's(!) birth-chart to get a picture of how you get along. This shows where you gel, if you clash, and even whether you're here to teach each other deep lessons for your personal development or soul’s journey in this lifetime.

When it comes to romantic relationships there are a few things that Heather, our resident astrologer and owner of the Alchemy Company, always look out for…

1: Opposite Rising Signs

For example, one of you has Gemini Rising and the other has Sagittarius Rising, or, Aries & Libra, Taurus & Scorpio, Cancer & Capricorn, Leo & Aquarius, Virgo & Pisces. This couple will have an opposites attract thing going on. They’ll have an initial magnetism that pulls them together, but it’s worth noting they’ll need more than just that to keep them together. A similar dynamic applies if you have your Sun opposite your partner’s Rising sign, or vice versa.

2. Moon Signs Of The Same Element

For example, two earth-sign Moons together, these people just ‘get’ each other on a deep emotional level.

Element groupings are:

Fire: Aries, Leo, Sagittarius

Earth: Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn

Air: Gemini, Libra, Aquarius

Water: Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces

3. Venus Sign Connection

For example, your Venus is in Aries, and their Sun Sign is Aries. Venus is the planet of love & tells us what we appreciate in a partner. If two people have the same Venus signs, or there's some crossover between one person’s Venus and the other’s Sun/Moon or Rising signs then it makes for a great match.

4. Ultimately & Most Importantly…Overall Chart Compatibility

The very best way to know if your relationship is written in the stars is to look at your whole charts in their entirety. This is the most accurate way to get a full picture of all the nuances of your relationship. For instance, dating someone with a lot of air element signs [Gemini, Libra, Aquarius] in their chart when you’re someone with a lot of water signs [Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces] won’t give you the emotional connection you seek.

Someone with a fire sign Mercury might be too harsh a communicator for someone whose Mercury is in Pisces, to give another example. And two people with lots of fire signs [Aries, Leo, Sagittarius] could find that the passion is fun at first but eventually runs over into shouting matches. Whereas two people with lots of Earth signs will make for a loyal partnership but might struggle to keep the fun alive in their relationship long term, unless they find connection across other parts of their charts and personalities.
